Frequently Asked Questions

Can I join if I'm not a student or am a student from another university?

We are a 100% student run club for students of the University of Auckland. But, if you're young (or young at heart) and send it hard on and off the water you're welcome to join us ;) NOTE: For the security of our gear we are unable to rent gear to travellers unless they are students on exchange at the UOA.

What does my membership get me?

As a member, you get discounts at local kitesurfing retailers, discounted lessons, access to our top-of-the-line gear, epic social events and so much more. As a member, you also get access to our members only facebook page. The Facebook page includes weather updates from our designated "Sessions Manager" with tips on what spot to hit for the specific wind direction, strength and your ability. On this page, we arrange to carpool to kite sessions and share general club yarns/ updates. If you're still not convinced, check out our Facebook and Instagram to check out what we get up to!

Can I join if I have never kitesurfed in my life?

Yes! Totally! As a club, we provide the ultimate pathway to get into kitesurfing. After you've utilised the club's discounted lessons you can hire our gear and come out with us for sessions. At these sessions, our advanced riders will be able to keep an eye on you and help you out if you run into strife!

How much is this club going to cost me?

After the membership fee, you'll need to get lessons if you haven't kited before. Lessons through the club are half price at $250. After that, you can hire our top-of-the-line gear for $5-$30 per item.

Can I get a refund on my membership?

Unfortunately we have a strict no-refunds policy on membership fees

Do I need to buy my own gear?

Nope! The club has everything you need available to rent! However, we would recommend purchasing a wetsuit as it gets pretty cold during winter

What sort of wetsuit should I buy?

We recommend a 3/2mm wetsuit or a 4/3mm wetsuit if you get particularly cold. Head to NZ Boardstore on Raymond St, Pt Chev and mention your part of the club for a good discount! Otherwise, head to Hyper Ride, they've got an awesome selection and are cheap! Also, check out the facebook page "nz trade us-kite/sail/surf" or for second-hand wetties.

If I want to purchase my own gear where should I look?

If you're looking to purchase second-hand gear check out the facebook page "nz trade us-kite/sail/surf" or If you're wanting brand new gear (wowee who are you? Bill Gates? Richard Branson? Will you marry our prez Chels?) check out

What gear does the club have?

The club boasts the ability to offer top-of-the-line gear to members, which is available to hire. We have a quiver of 2017 Cabrinha kites purchased in August 2016. These kites include a selection of; 8m, 10m and 12m switchblades, 8m and 10m FX's, and 15m Chaos's. We also purchased a range of Ozone kites at the end of 2018. These kites include; a 7m, 8m, 9m and 10m Catalyst V1 and a 7m, 9m, 11m, 14m Enduro V1 and a 17m Zephyr V5. We also have a selection of beginner to advanced boards, trainer kites, harnesses and bars.

How do I rent gear?

Once you've done lessons and/or are IKO level 3 qualified (can get up on the board and ride confidently) you can rent our gear through our renting tab above. Make sure you read the rules prior to renting. After you've rented your gear you'll receive a confirmation email with information about gear pick-up and drop-off.

I'm an exchange student who kites, what kites should I bring with me?

If you don't want to rent our gear a 9m and a 12m would probably give you the best range for NZ conditions. You'll also definitely need a wetsuit (probably a 3/2 or a 4/3).

Social Events:

Can I join and not kite and just come to the social events?

Yes, absolutely, yes! Our social events are well worth signing up for!

What sort of social events do you offer?

We offer a whole range of social events including welcome evenings, BYO's, away weekends, beginners weekends, open days, cable wakeboarding sessions, club kite sessions, weddings, prom's, combined events with other clubs (you name it we've probably hosted one).

What do I need to know as an exchange student in the club?

Exchange students add to the vibrant culture of our club! We love having them around! If you're coming to a social event you will need ID to get into a bar. The only ID that is accepted in NZ is a passport (any passport), an NZ drivers license or an 18+ card. Also, a BYO is a dinner at a restaurant where you bring a bottle of wine (or more) into the restaurant with you

Is it true that the kitesurfing club is the best-looking club on campus?

Yes, just check out our Instagram or Facebook if you don't believe us.
